I was a 10 ton driver with the 62nd LC from it's beginning.
Some of us had been with the 573rd Engineer Float Bridge
Battalion. When I got in country in October 68 the 573rd
was deactivating. I was assigned a 5 ton bridge truck and
made some runs to Newport docks and brought supplies back
to Long Binh. In late 68 the word came down that there was
going to be a new land clearing battalion formed and they
needed 10 ton drivers. Volunteering was a no brainer for me. We were a motley bunch but fit in well with the plow
companies and the 'Gypsy' lifestyle suited me just fine.
I enjoyed this site immensely. It is by far the best that I've seen.

I am the sister of Gordon Swacina, who served in your company. He survived Vietnam only to serve in area 51 in Nevada as a civilian resulting in his exposure to radiation. He died of radiation induced leukemia on December 10, 1996. He was born November 18, 1944. He was on active duty in Panama when diagnosed with leukemia. The Army took SEVEN months to approve his bone marrow transplant and approved it only after a letter writing campaign to Congress. By that time, his leukemia had advanced to the point where it would be much more difficult to cure. He was one of the victrms of POOR HEALTH CARE FOR SOLDIERS. I encourage those in his unit to write letters to Congress and inform them that soldiers DESERVE THE VERY BEST HEALTH CARE, NOT THE WORSE. Criminals receive better care then our soldiers!

I experience memory loss as a result of my injuries, and was absolutely blown away when I received a letter in the mail from Butch Bowman 35 years after I left the War. was listed under another e-mail address but the bill did not get payed on time while i was in the VA hospital in Dallas.I have type 2 diabetes mellitus and neuropathy in both legs feet.The VA saids it is presumably caused by exposure to Agent Orange. If your bloodsugar is higher than 110 and climbing get a grip on it, They want tell you that your on you way to being a diabetic your bloodsugar goes over 200,thats what i told mine was 687 and now iam on insulin shots twice a day.If your not on the Agent Orange Roster get on it!!! The moving Viet Nam Memorial wall came through Independence, Kansas last month (October) and I was finally able to see the names of those killed in my husband's (Terry Lee Wood) unit. I remember the day he received the letter telling him they were killed and how terrible hard it was for him. Terry died of a heart attack on June 23, 1985. They will never be forgotten.

Hello this is "D" from the 59th LC 9-10-1969 thru 2-12-1970 and again 10-8-1970 thru 12-9-1971. I looked at the photo album it brought back lots of memories. I served in Co. B 577th Eng. Bn. (const) 8-9-1967 to 7-1-1968 then the 59th then 137th Eng.Co.(LE) 2-15-1970 to 10-6-1970 then to the 59th again then 1st Cav Div. (am) S&T Co. 3rd Bd. 1st AV Div. 12-10-1971 to 5-30-1972. On your websight I didn't see any mention about the rocks that moved that were really big giant lizards. Another memory I had was when a bunch went to a swimming hole to get clean and came up with ringworm, I didn't get it because I was putting a pan up on the dozer. I hope to hear from some of you. I viewed this site after I received a message today on my answering machine looking for my Uncle Lowell T Renshaw which served in the Unit. Sad to say he passed away June 22, 2003 of cancer from agen orange. He left a wife, 2 sons amd 3 grandchildren at the time. I guess the war will never end for some out there. I spent 11 years in the Army myself and know the need to connect with old friends. And to get the bad news that one has fallen brings it all back again. I served with the 59th En in Panama from 90-94. If I am not mistaken the same unit desiganate as yours. I was there when Panama's Flag was cased again in 94. This was one of the best times of my life.

The 59th ( part of the 193rd Inf Bde) was a SAPPER company split with one platoon Airborne and one Air Assault. The only land we cleared was small LZ/PZ and objectives. We were a light unit so it was hand tools or demo.

Regardless I am proud to have served under the number 59th which has such a great legacy.

Just returned from reunion that was held in Louisville, Ky, where I met some of the men that have signed the 59th LCC guest book. I have great admiration for all the vietnam veterans, they were serving in a harsh country where no one knew friend from enemy. It has taken many years for the American people to honor not only the Korean Vets, but also the Vietnam Vets. I viewed this site after I received a message today on my answering machine looking for my Uncle Lowell T Renshaw which served in the Unit. Sad to say he passed away June 22, 2003 of cancer from agen orange. He left a wife, 2 sons amd 3 grandchildren at the time. I guess the war will never end for some out there. I spent 11 years in the Army myself and know the need to connect with old friends. And to get the bad news that one has fallen brings it all back again. Hello this is "D" from the 59th LC 9-10-1969 thru 2-12-1970 and again 10-8-1970 thru 12-9-1971. I looked at the photo album it brought back lots of memories. I served in Co. B 577th Eng. Bn. (const) 8-9-1967 to 7-1-1968 then the 59th then 137th Eng.Co.(LE) 2-15-1970 to 10-6-1970 then to the 59th again then 1st Cav Div. (am) S&T Co. 3rd Bd. 1st AV Div. 12-10-1971 to 5-30-1972. On your websight I didn't see any mention about the rocks that moved that were really big giant lizards. Another memory I had was when a bunch went to a swimming hole to get clean and came up with ringworm, I didn't get it because I was putting a pan up on the dozer. I hope to hear from some of you. I served with the 59th En in Panama from 90-94. If I am not mistaken the same unit desiganate as yours. I was there when Panama's Flag was cased again in 94. This was one of the best times of my life.

The 59th ( part of the 193rd Inf Bde) was a SAPPER company split with one platoon Airborne and one Air Assault. The only land we cleared was small LZ/PZ and objectives. We were a light unit so it was hand tools or demo.

Regardless I am proud to have served under the number 59th which has such a great legacy.

Great web site Tim. Frank Reyes turned me onto it, he also sends his greetings. I was in the 14th Eng. at Fort Ord, Ca. from 85-87 as a heavy equipment operator. I ran a road grader mostly. After that I went to the 78th Eng. in Ettlingen, Germany for 2 years. I really enjoyed the pictures on this site as they remind me of when I was in the service. There's a certain look of Engineer and I recognize that look in these photo's.
